FIU Detectives Seize Two Loaded Firearms Friday

Springfield, Mass. — Members of the Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Lt. Brian Beliveau seized two loaded firearms and made two arrests Friday night.  FIU Detectives had been conducting an illegal firearms investigation for several days with Luke McKinnie as the suspect.  McKinnie has open firearms charges in Hampden District Court from a previous arrest in Springfield.

On Friday February 11th at approximately 10:10 p.m. Detectives were conducting surveillance when they observed McKinnie get into the passenger seat of a car and drive off.  Detectives then conducted a traffic stop in a parking lot on the 300 block of Main Street.  McKinnie ignored Detectives commands and took off running, scaling multiple fences before being taken into custody near the intersection of Mill Street and East Columbus Avenue.  Detectives then located a firearm McKinnie tossed during the foot pursuit.

Back on Main Street Detectives had detained the driver of the car, later identified as Xavion Martin.  Detectives observed a firearm between his feet on the floorboard.

19 year old Luke McKinnie of Springfield is charged with:

  • Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm on a Public Way
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm

20 year old Xavion Martin of Springfield is charged with:

  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • CArrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  • Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle
