Murder Suspect in Genesee Street Fatal Shooting Arrested Friday

Springfield, Mass. — A Springfield Police Department Homicide Unit investigation under the direction of Captain Trent Duda has led to an arrest of a murder suspect in connection to a fatal shooting from Sunday June 26th on Genesee Street.

At approximately 8:00 a.m. Friday July 1st members of the Springfield Police Detective Bureau under the direction of Captain Duda, Springfield Police Warrant Apprehension Unit, Springfield Police Emergency Services Unit (ESU), U.S. Marshal Task Force, Hampden County Sheriff’s Department and Massachusetts State Police VFAS arrested 22-year-old Armando Rodriguez at a home on the 0-100 block of Ina Street on a warrant for murder charges.

On Sunday June 26th around 6:30 p.m. Springfield Police Officers responded to the 0-100 block of Genesee Street for a report of a gunshot victim.  Officers located an adult male gunshot victim and provided first aid.  The victim, later identified as 41-year-old Rashad Taylor of Springfield, was transported to Baystate where he succumbed to his injuries Sunday evening.

The Springfield Police Homicide Unit under the direction of Captain Duda immediately began investigating.  On June 30th Homicide Detectives applied for and were granted a warrant to arrest Rodriguez on murder and firearms charges.

This remains an open and ongoing investigation by the Springfield Police Homicide Unit and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Murder Unit.

Rodriguez was transported to the Hampden County House of Corrections in Ludlow and he is expected to be arraigned Friday afternoon.  His booking photo will be available after his arraignment.

22-year-old Armando Rodriguez of Springfield is charged with:

  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
  • Malicious Damage to a Motor Vehicle
