Out on Bail for Firearms Charges, SPD Firearms Investigation Unit Arrest Suspect who Led Detectives on a Pursuit with a 3-year-old in the Car with Another Gun

Springfield, Mass. — On Friday May 27th at approximately 8:00 p.m. members of the Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Sgt. Christopher Hitas along with Springfield Police Officers assigned to Squad C seized a loaded firearm and arrested 21-year-old Jesus Oquendo on the 0-100 block of Queen Street.

FIU Detectives received information that Oquendo was in possession of a firearm.  They located Oquendo driving a car on Alderman Street and attempted to conduct a traffic stop due to the fact that Oquendo did not have an active driver’s license.   Oquendo did not stop, driving on a yard on Marlborough Street and running stop signs, red lights while putting numerous pedestrians and drivers in danger.  Oquendo went the wrong-way on Queen Street when he crashed into another moving vehicle.

Detectives then were able to place Oquendo under arrest.  A three-year-old was in the back seat of the car.

Detectives then recovered a firearm loaded with nine rounds of ammunition.

Oquendo was previously arrested by the FIU in November 2021 for firearms charges and was currently out on bail while that case is pending.

21-year-old Jesus Oquendo of Springfield is charged with:
