SPD Detective Bureau Investigation Leads to Arrest of Shooting Suspect
Springfield, Mass. — On Wednesday September 14th at approximately 8:20 a.m. members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit under the direction of Captain Brian Keenan, U.S. Marshal Task Force and Massachusetts State Police VFAS arrested 41-year-old Jose Mendoza inside an apartment on the 300 block of Maple Street on a warrant for his involvement in an August 10th shooting.
On Wednesday August 10th Springfield Police Officers responded to a ShotSpotter Activation on the 200 block of Union Street. Mendoza is alleged to have been chasing an individual with a metal bat when an unknown suspect began shooting and struck Mendoza in the leg. Mendoza then is alleged to have pulled out a firearm and returns fire into a parking lot. The SPD Detective Bureau began investigating and applied for and were granted a warrant for Mendoza’s arrest. The incident remains under investigation.
41-year-old Jose Mendoza of Springfield is charged with:
- Arrest Warrant
– Assault with a Dangerous Weapon
– Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
– Possession of a Firearm without a FID Card
