SPD FIU Detectives Seize Firearm after Shots Fired Thursday

Springfield, Mass. — On Thursday January 20th members of the Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit were conducting surveillance as part of an ongoing investigation on Eldridge Street when several individuals walked out of a home, including the target of the investigation.  The group walked towards Meredith Street when Detectives observed the target of the investigation, a 16 year old male, take out a firearm and fire two shots.  Nothing was struck.

This shooting activated the city’s ShotSpotter system and additional officers responded to the area as Detectives relayed their observations.  Detectives were involved in a short foot pursuit when additional officers arrived.  Detectives and Officers caught up to the 16 year old on Pomona Street and he was placed under arrest.  The firearm was also recovered.

Detectives then applied for and were granted a search warrant for the home on Eldridge Street.  Around 7:00 p.m. they executed a search warrant and seized an additional 10 round magazine.

The 16 year old male faces numerous firearms charges, due to his age no further details will be released.
