SPD FIU Detectives Seize Firearm, Trafficking Weight of Cocaine

Springfield, Mass. — On Tuesday February 22nd at approximately 6:30 p.m. members of the Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Lieutenant Brian Beliveau seized a loaded firearm, approximately 29 grams of powder and crack-cocaine and made two arrests on the 0-100 block of Notre Dame Street.

Based on citizens’ complaints Detectives have been conducting an investigation into illegal drug activity in the area of Lang Street and identified two suspects; Devin Austin and Gabriel Martinez.  While conducting surveillance on Lang Street Tuesday Detectives observed what they believed to be several drug transactions.  A short time later Martinez and Austin got into a car and drove away.

Support Detectives arrived and they conducted a traffic stop on the 0-100 block of Notre Dame Street.  Martinez and Austin were detained pending a search of the car.  Inside the car Detectives seized a loaded firearm, a starter pistol, approximately 29 grams of powder and crack-cocaine, one bag of MDMA and cash.  Detectives then placed Martinez and Austin under arrest.

22 year old Gabriel Martinez of Springfield is charged with:

  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  • Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law
  • Trafficking Cocaine 18 – 36 Grams
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class B Drug

22 year old Devin Austin of Chicopee is charged with:

  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law
  • Trafficking Cocaine 18 – 36 Grams
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class B Drug
