SPD FIU Detectives Seize Large Capacity Firearm, Heroin and Cocaine

Springfield, Mass. — On Thursday August 4th at approximately 1:00 p.m. members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) seized a loaded high capacity firearm, approximately 150 bags of heroin, a bag of cocaine and nearly $1000 in cash.  34-year-old Luis Gonzalez was arrested.

For the past several weeks FIU Detectives have been investigating drug distribution and illegal firearms activity in the Salem Street area with Gonzalez as a suspect.

On that Thursday Detectives observed a drug transaction in a parking lot on the 0-100 block of Salem Street.  When Detectives activated their emergency lights Gonzalez began to run away refusing to listen to officer’s commands.  A Detective was able to catch up to Gonzalez but he continued to struggled and began reaching for his fanny pack.  Assisting Detectives arrived and eventually were able to place Gonzalez under arrest as he continued to resist and reach for his fanny pack.

Inside the fanny pack FIU Detectives recovered a large capacity firearm loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition, approximately 14 grams of cocaine, approximately 150 bags of heroin and $978 in cash.

Gonzalez has two prior convictions for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

34-year-old Luis Gonzalez of Springfield is charged with:

  • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm during the Commission of a Felony
  • Firearm Violation with 3 Prior Violent/Drug Crimes
  • Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm on a Public Way
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class A Drug
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class B Drug
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
  • Violation of an Abuse Prevention Order
