SPD FIU Detectives Seize Loaded Large Capacity Firearm, Heroin and Cocaine Tuesday Night

Springfield, Mass. — At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday June 21st members of the Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) arrested 22-year-old Alexander Santiago and seized a loaded large capacity firearm, heroin, cocaine, oxycodone and cash.

FIU Detectives have been investigating Santiago for several months.  On Tuesday Detectives received information that Santiago was in possession of a firearm.  After conducting surveillance Detectives observed Santiago leave a home and then conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Hancock and State Streets.

Detectives recovered a large capacity firearm loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition, approximately 100 bags of heroin with a possible mixture of fentanyl, 7 oxycodone pills, more than 12 grams of cocaine, a loose round of ammunition and $1033 in cash.

22-year-old Alexander Santiago of Springfield is charged with:

  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm on a Public Way
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm during the Commission of a Felony (4 Counts)
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class B Drug (3 Counts)
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class A Drug
  • Possession of Ammunition without a FID Card
