SPD FIU Detectives Seize Two Loaded Large Capacity Ghost Guns and Trafficking Weight of Fentanyl

Springfield, Mass. — On Thursday August 18th at approximately 9:00 p.m. members for the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Captain Brian Keenan seized two loaded large capacity Ghost Guns, trafficking weight in Fentanyl and arrested two suspects on Murray Hill Avenue.

For the past week FIU Detectives have been conducting an investigation for a suspect who was possessing illegal firearms.  On Thursday evening Detectives received information that the suspect was in possession of a firearm.  Detectives located the suspect in a car on Murray Hill Avenue along with two passengers.

Detectives activated their emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop.  One suspect began to run and was able to evade police at this time.   A second suspect, Jahiem Sutherland, fled on foot before being taken into custody not far from the car.  The driver, Brayan Mejias, was taken into custody at the car.

During the investigation Detectives recovered approximately 539 bags of fentanyl, 8 grams of crack-cocaine and seized two loaded Ghost Guns.  One firearm was loaded was capable of holding 22 rounds of ammunition and loaded with 16 rounds.  The second firearm was loaded with 23 rounds of ammunition and capable of holding 31 rounds.

Sutherland was recently arrested on July 29th for illegally operating a dirt bike.

A third suspect who fled on foot was identified.  Detectives applied for a criminal complaint for firearms charges for that suspect.

18-year-old Jahiem Sutherland of Springfield is charged with:

  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License – 2nd Offense
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Trafficking Fentanyl More than 10 Grams
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
  • Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class B Drug
  • Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm
  • Default Warrant

22-year-old Brayan Mejias of Springfield is charged with:

  • Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
