SPD FIU, MSP Arrest Repeat Offender with a Loaded Firearm Wearing an Ankle Bracelet

Holyoke, Mass. — At approximately 9:00 p.m. Tuesday October 4th members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) and Massachusetts State Police C.I.N.R.E.T. seized a loaded firearm and arrested 19-year-old Geovonnie Sykes on the 200 block of Maple Street in Holyoke.

FIU Detectives have been conducting an illegal firearms investigation with Sykes as a suspect over the past few days.  On Tuesday Detectives received information that Sykes was illegally in possession of a Firearm and on a PVTA Bus.  Springfield Detectives contacted the State Police C.I.N.R.E.T. Unit to assist due to the bus travelling to Holyoke.  When Sykes got off the bus in Holyoke Sykes was detained.  Detectives recovered a loaded firearm in his backpack.  Sykes was placed under arrest and brought to the Northampton State Police Barracks for processing.

At the time of this arrest Sykes was wearing a probation ordered GPS ankle bracelet.   Sykes has prior firearms and Assault and Battery convictions, including Assault and Battery on a Corrections Officer.

19-year-old Geovonnie Sykes of Springfield is charged with:

  • Carrying a Firearm without a License – 2nd Offense
  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License – 2nd Offense
  • Firearm Violation with 2 Prior Violent/Drug Crimes
  • Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm
