SPD Officers Arrest Driver who Refused to Stop and Crashed into a Cruiser
Springfield, Mass. — On Wednesday September 21st at approximately 1:20 a.m. Springfield Police Officers arrested 25-year-old Carlos Ortiz-Hilerio after he crashed into a police cruiser and two parked vehicles.
A few minutes earlier officers observed a vehicle, driven by Ortiz-Hilerio, with a blown out tire crossing the center line of the road on Main Street near Carew Street. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but Ortiz-Hilerio refused to stop driving over curb and then through a red light.
Assisting officers arrived in this low-speed pursuit as Ortiz-Hilerio ran another red light at Main Street and Boland Way. Ortiz-Hilerio turned on Fremont Street and struck a cruiser with two officers inside. He later drove the wrong way down Margaret Street striking two parked vehicles before stopping and getting out of the car. Officers placed Ortiz-Hilerio under arrest.
25-year-old Carlos Ortiz-Hilerio of Springfield is charged with:
- Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
- OUI-Liquor
- Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- Failure to Stop for Police
- Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon
- Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon
- Possession of an Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle
- Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident
- Resisting Arrest
