SPD Officers Arrest Suspect, Recover Firearm Saturday Night on Lowell Street

Springfield, Mass. — At approximately 7:00 p.m. Saturday December 4th Springfield Police Officers arrested 19 year old Keniel Santiago on the third floor of an apartment on the 100 block of Lowell Street.

Shortly after 6:00pm Santiago allegedly discharged a firearm striking a door as two victims ran away from him into their apartment on Lowell Street.  As officers arrived Santiago was fleeing in a car and pointed a gun outside the passenger window towards the officers.  An officer discharged his service pistol striking the car.  The car traveling at a high rate of speed crashed on Riverside Road.  The unidentified driver and Santiago got out of the car and fled on foot.

Shortly before 7:00 p.m. officers received information that an unknown person was on the third floor of a Lowell Street apartment.  Officers cleared the first two floors.  K9 Mr. Warner alerted officers to a firearm on the third floor landing.  K9 Mr. Warner’s attention then shifted to an adjacent closet.  Officers located Santiago inside the closet and he was placed under arrest.

19 year old Keniel Santiago of Springfield is charged with:

  • Possession of a Firearm without a FID Card
  • Improper Storage of a Firearm
  • Discharging a Firearm within 500 feet of a Building
  • Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (4 Counts)
  • Assault & Battery on a Family/Household Member
  • Breaking and Entering into a Building at Nighttime
