SPD Officers Seize Loaded Firearm After Clearing Park After Dusk
Springfield, Mass. — On Thursday August 18th at approximately 8:35 p.m. Springfield Police Officers seized a loaded firearm and made two arrests on the 0-100 block of State Street after clearing a parking lot at Riverfront Park after dusk.
Around 8:15 p.m. officers were conducting traffic control to clear a parking lot at Riverfront Park where numerous individuals were drinking and smoking marijuana. The park closes at dusk and officers began to clear to crowd.
Officers observed a vehicle with modified height and conducted a traffic stop. The driver, identified as Juan Torres, was placed under arrest since his license was suspended. The passenger, identified as Davis Charles, did not have a license to drive the car home so it was to be towed. During a search of the car officers located a digital scale and more than the legal amount of marijuana. Officers then detained Charles pending an investigation. During a search of his backpack Officers recovered a loaded firearm that was reported stolen out of Pittsfield. Officers then placed Charles under arrest.
29-year-old Davis Charles of Springfield is charged with:
- Carrying a Firearm without a License
- Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
- Possession of Ammunition without a FID Card
- Receiving Stolen Property Less than $1200
- Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug
32-year-old Juan Torres of Springfield is charged with:
- Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
- Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug
