SPD Officers Seize Nearly 200 Grams of Cocaine and a Large Capacity Firearm Tuesday Afternoon

Springfield, Mass. — At approximately 2:00 p.m. Tuesday Springfield Police Officers assigned to the Metro Unit conducted a traffic stop on the 300 block of State Street due to a vehicle having an expired registration.  The driver, identified as 32-year-old Cruz Fernandez, also did not have a license in his possession.  Officers asked the driver to step outside the vehicle for it to be towed.

Officers conducting an inventory search of the vehicle prior to the tow discovered a large amount of powder and crack-cocaine.  As Officers went to place Fernandez under arrest he began to run away.  Officers were able to apprehend Fernandez a short distance away.

Officers then continuing the search recovered a loaded large capacity firearm under a seat.  Officers also located a second loaded magazine, oxycodone and cash.  Approximately 197 grams of cocaine was seized along with more than $2000.

32-year-old Cruz Fernandez of Springfield is charged with:

  • Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm on a Public Way
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Possession of a High Capacity Magazine/Feeding Device
  • Possession of Ammunition without a FID Card
  • Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony
  • Cocaine Trafficking More than 100 Grams
  • Unregistered Motor Vehicle
  • License not in Possession
