Springfield Police Department — Fallen Officers 


January 8, 1973 — William BerteOfficer Berte was shot and killed in the line of duty by another officer in the department’s garage after an argument.  The other officer was charged with murder.  Officer Berte was 28 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 3 years. 

February 2, 1940 — Thomas MurphyOfficer Murphy and Officer John Sullivan were killed in the line of duty when they were struck by a train.  Officer Murphy was 50 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 25 years.  

February 2, 1940 — John SullivanOfficer Sullivan and Officer Thomas Murphy were killed in the line of duty when they were struck by a train.  Officer Sullivan was 66 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 35 years.  

February 20, 1953 — John Connors Officer Connors was killed in the line of duty in a motorcycle crash.  He was a World War II veteran and had been a motorcycle officer for six years.  Officer Connors was 34 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 7 years. 

April 11, 1973 — Richard Vigneault Officer Vigneault was killed in the line of duty when his patrol car was struck head-on by a drunk driver.  Officer Vigneault was 32 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 5 years.

June 4, 2012 — Kevin AmbroseOfficer Ambrose was shot and killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance.  Officer Ambrose was 55 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 36 years. 

June 21, 1969 — Walter Juskiewicz Officer Juskiewicz suffered a fatal heart attack while on duty.  Officer Juskiewicz was 47 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 19 years.

August 31, 1934 — Adelbert St. MarieOfficer St. Marie was killed in the line of duty in a motorcycle crash while attempting to make a traffic stop.  Officer St. Marie was 23 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 2 years.  

September 11, 1967 — Francis SearsOfficer Sears suffered a fatal heart attack while on duty after conducting a raid and questioning suspects in an armed robbery.  Officers Sears, a Detective, was 43 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 13 years. 

September 20, 1946 — Raymond MoriartyOfficer Moriarty was struck and killed in the line of duty by a vehicle while directing traffic on the Memorial Bridge.  He was a World War II Veteran.  Officer Moriarty was 30 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 4 years. 

September 29, 1908 — Reserve Officer Daniel DonovanReserve Officer Donovan was killed in the line of duty when he was accidentally shot by another Reserve Officer.  Reserve Officer Donovan was 35 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 8 months.  

October 5, 1675 — Constable Thomas Miller

Constable Miller was killed in the line of duty just prior to the burning of Springfield during King Phillip’s War.  Constable Miller was 41 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 1 year.  

October 30, 1973 — Paul Mawaka Officer Mawaka was killed in the line of duty in a motorcycle crash.  Officer Mawaka was struck by a hit and run driver while returning to the station at the end of his shift.  Officer Mawaka was 34 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 9 years.  

October 31, 1955 — Leo HamelOfficer Hamel was killed in the line of duty when he was crushed between two vehicles while attempting to stop a vehicle from being driving by a patient with mental health issues.  Officer Hamel had jumped onto the running board of the vehicle, but was killed when the vehicle sideswiped a second vehicle.  Officer Hamel was 26 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 3 years.  

November 2, 1938 — Carl Rolf
Officer Rolf was shot and killed in the line of duty as he and other officers raided a local hangout.  Another officer was critically wounded and the suspect was shot and killed.  Officer Rolf was 41 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 16 years. 

November 12, 1985 — Michael Schiavina Officer Schiavina and Officer Alain Beauregard were shot and killed in the line of duty while approaching a vehicle with two men inside.  One of the men had an outstanding warrant and opened fire as the officers approached the car.  Officer Schiavina was 28 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 6 years. 

November 15, 1985 — Alain BeauregardOfficer Beauregard and Officer Michael Schiavina were shot and killed in the line of duty while approaching  a vehicle with two men inside.  One of the men had an outstanding warrant and opened fire as the officers approached the car.  Officer Beauregard succumbed to his injuries three days later.  Officer Beauregard was 28 years old, serving with the Springfield Police Department for 6 years.
