Springfield Police Officers Arrest Reckless Driver, Juvenile Carrying A Firearm Tuesday Night

Springfield, Mass. — On Tuesday April 12th at approximately 6:15 p.m. Springfield Police Officers seized a loaded firearm and made two arrests after locating a vehicle suspected in an incident involving a firearm earlier in the day.

Around 6:00 p.m. patrol officers observed a vehicle that was suspected to be involved in several incidents throughout the day, including one involving a firearm.  Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop at Bay and Thompson Streets, but the driver, later identified as Jorge Santiago, refused to stop and sped away.  Crime Analysts in the Real-Time Analysis Center (R-TAC) notified officers that the car involved was reported stolen out of Chicopee.

A short time later another officer spotted the suspect vehicle on King Street and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  Santiago once again refused to stop.  Santiago then observed additional police presence and attempted to make a U-Turn, but struck a fire hydrant on Massachusetts Avenue near Westford Circle.

Santiago and a juvenile passenger got out of the car and attempted to run away.  Officers detained the juvenile on Wilbraham Avenue and seized a loaded firearm from his sweatshirt pocket.  The firearm was reported stolen out of Dorchester.

Officers then detained Santiago on Westford Circle and placed him under arrest.

20 year old Jorge Santiago of Springfield is charged with:

  • Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle
  • Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident
  • Failure to Stop for Police

The 14 year old juvenile male faces numerous firearms charges, due to his age no further information will be released.
