Springfield Police Officers Seize Two Loaded Firearms, Trafficking Weight of Heroin after Shots Fired on Kensington Avenue

Firearms Investigation Unit has Seized 18 Guns in the Past 30 Days

Springfield, Mass. — On Wednesday May 18th at approximately 4:40 p.m. Springfield Police Officers, Springfield Police Detectives and members of the Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit arrested four suspects, recovered two loaded firearms and seized a trafficking weight of heroin after responding to a shots fired call.

Around 4:10 p.m. officers responded to the 100 block of Kensington Avenue for a report of shots fired and a Shotspotter activation.  Detectives assigned to the Firearms Investigation Unit received information that suspects with firearms drove away from the scene.  A K9 Officer located the suspect vehicle with five individuals inside at the intersection of White Street and Sumner Avenue.  The driver attempted to speed away before assisting officers were able to stop the car on Belmont Avenue.

One passenger, later identified as Joel Perez, attempted to run away before the K9 officer detained him in the area of Belmont and Commonwealth Avenues.  A second passenger, later identified as Jan Carlos Cosme, attempted to flee on foot but was detained by a Springfield Police Officer in the area of Commonwealth Avenue and Hollywood Street.

Springfield Police Officers were able to detain two additional passengers, identified as Derek Ramos-Sanchez and Marco Gonzalez-Ortiz at the suspect vehicle.

The driver ran away and was able to evade police at this time.

Springfield Police Detectives arrived and observed a loaded high capacity firearm inside the car.   After a search, a second large capacity firearm, approximately 5200 bags (approximately 104 grams) of packaged heroin, and a bag of cocaine were recovered inside the car.  Additionally, more than $2400 in cash was recovered inside the car and on the suspects.

On Kensington Avenue officers located two vehicles that had been struck with gunfire, the front porch of a home struck by gunfire, porch stairs and a window struck at another home, an apartment where a bullet went through a wall and lodged in a television and another apartment struck by gunfire with two juveniles inside.

26-year-old Derek Ramos-Sanchez of Springfield is charged with:

  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity on a Public Way
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm during the Commission of a Felony
  • Trafficking Heroin 100-200 Grams
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Laws
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class B Drug

21-year-old Marco Gonzalez-Ortiz of Chicopee is charged with:

  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity on a Public Way
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm during the Commission of a Felony
  • Trafficking Heroin 100-200 Grams
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Laws
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class B Drug

22-year-old Joel Perez of Springfield is charged with:

  • Trafficking Heroin 100-200 Grams
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Laws
  • Arrest Warrant
    – Carrying a Firearm without a License
    – Conspiracy to Violate Drug Laws
    – Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class B Drug

21-year-old Jan Carlos Cosme of Springfield is charged with:

  • Trafficking Heroin 100-200 Grams
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Laws
