Suspect Removes GPS Bracelet, Drives Recklessly with Three Young Children in his car before being taken into custody

Springfield, Mass. — On Wednesday November 17th at approximately 9:50 a.m. members of the Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit, U.S. Marshals Task Force, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, Hampden County SAFE Unit and Hampden County Sheriff’s Department arrested 25 year old Demetrius Caballero on the 900 block of St. James Avenue.

Members of these law enforcement agencies were searching for Caballero due to the fact that he removed his court-ordered GPS ankle bracelet and had two outstanding default warrants.  Officers located Caballero in a car parked in a parking lot on the 900 block of St. James Boulevard.  As officers approached him, Caballero put his car into reverse and drove backwards over the curb, over the sidewalk and into oncoming traffic on St. James Avenue.  Caballero continued in reverse striking a street sign and an unmarked cruiser.  The car came to rest on St. James Avenue and as Caballero attempted to run away he was taken into custody.  Inside the car were three young children and an adult male.  Detectives also seized approximately a pound of marijuana from the car.

On November 19th, 2020 members of the Massachusetts State Police and Westfield Police executed a search warrant at Caballero’s home in Westfield after a Massachusetts State Police investigation.  During that search investigators seized a large quantity of marijuana, an illegally possessed AR-15 rifle with a loaded 30-round magazine inserted, an illegally-possessed Glock 42 pistol with a loaded magazine and assorted ammunition.  The photograph is from the 11/19/2020 arrest and courtesy of the Massachusetts State Police.
