Suspect Wearing GPS Ankle Monitor for Pending Gun Charges, Arrested with Large Capacity Firearm

Springfield, Mass. —– On Tuesday August 6th at approximately 5:20 p.m., members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Springfield Police Sergeants Jaime Bruno and David Robillard, assisted by members of the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department and Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit seized a loaded large capacity firearm and arrested 18-year-old Aaron Carrillo-Vega on Rodney Smith Jr. Circle.

For the past several months, FIU Detectives have been investigating Carrillo-Vega for the possession of an illegal firearm.  At the time of Carrillo-Vega’s arrest on Tuesday he was outfitted with a GPS ankle monitoring bracelet from a pending case in which he was arrested, and two firearms were recovered.

Around 4:00 p.m. Tuesday Detectives received information that Carrillo-Vega was currently in possession of an illegal firearm in the area of Rodney Smith Jr. Circle.  Detectives located Carrillo-Vega in a parking lot with several other individuals standing around two cars.   Detectives conducted surveillance and saw Carrillo-Vega go into his home and come back to the parking lot.  When assisting Detectives arrived, they detained Carrillo-Vega and the other individuals in the parking lot.

Detectives then searched Carrillo-Vega’s bedroom and located a firearm loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition and additional ammunition.  Detectives placed Carrillo-Vega under arrest and the other individuals were released.

18-year-old Aaron Carrillo-Vega of Springfield is charged with:

  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm on a Public Way
  • Possession of a High-Capacity Magazine/Feeding Device
  • Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
  • Possession of a Firearm with a Defaced Serial Number
  • Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm near a Minor
  • Possession of a Firearm without an FID Card
