SPD Homicide Unit Investigation Leads to an Arrest in Wednesday’s Murder

Springfield, Mass. — At approximately 9:45 a.m. on Friday October 4th, members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit under the direction of Captain Brian Keenan assisted by members of the Massachusetts State Police VFAS and Hampden County Sheriff’s Department arrested 68-year-old Erving McLeod near the intersection of Knox Street and Mill Street in connection with an early morning homicide on October 2nd.

On Wednesday at approximately 1:15 a.m., officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation on the 200 block of Hancock Street. Officers located an adult male gunshot victim. He was transported to Baystate and succumbed to his injuries.

The Springfield Police Homicide Unit under the direction of Captain Trent Duda began investigating and on Thursday developed information on a suspect.  Detectives located him Friday morning.

McLeod is expected to be arraigned in Springfield District Court Monday.

This is an ongoing investigation conducted by the Springfield Police Homicide Unit in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit.

68-year-old Erving McLeod of Springfield is charged with:

  • Murder
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  • Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
  • Firearm-Armed Robbery
  • Default Warrant
