Car Thieves Targeting Hyundai’s, Kia’s

Springfield, Mass. — The Springfield Police Department is urging our residents who have Hyundai’s or Kia’s to contact their local dealership to ensure their vehicles have the latest software updates that would help prevent your car from being stolen.

Nationally, the theft of these vehicles has increased sharply due a lack of engine immobilizers and in part to a social media challenge.
In April in Springfield a dozen Hyundai’s and Kia’s have been stolen in addition to 13 incidents of break-ins and thefts from these cars.
The Springfield Police has arrested three juveniles this month in connection to several of these thefts.
About 3.8 million Hyundai’s and 4.5 million Kia’s are eligible for the software update.
