FIU Detectives Seize Large Capacity Firearm

Springfield, Mass. — On Wednesday November 27th at approximately 7:40 p.m., members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Sergeant David Robillard seized a large capacity firearm and arrested 21-year-old Kareem Evans.

FIU Detectives were conducting an investigation in the Pine Point neighborhood and observed a vehicle drive away from a home with a revoked registration.  Detectives maintained mobile surveillance as the vehicle travelled into Chicopee.  As assisting Detectives arrived and within the SPD’s mutual aid agreement, a traffic stop was conducted near the intersection of Orchard Street and Front Street.

The passenger, later identified as Evans, ran out of the car holding a backpack.  Detectives were able to catch up to him, and he dropped the backpack.  Evans then ran a few more feet before surrendering.

Inside the bag, Detectives located a loaded large capacity firearm capable of holding 15 rounds of ammunition as well as a large bag of marijuana.  Evans was placed under arrest.  The vehicle was towed, and the driver was issued a citation.

21-year-old Kareem Evans of Brooklyn, NY is charged with:

  • Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm on a Public Way
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug
  • Violation of an Abuse Prevention Order
  • Arrest Warrant
