SPD C3 Unit Recovers Large-Capacity Firearm during Anti-Drag Racing Detail
Springfield, Mass. — On Sunday September 29th at approximately 2:35 a.m., members of the Springfield Police C3 Unit and an officer assigned to Squad “C” seized a loaded large capacity firearm and arrested 35-year-old Darrell Smith during an anti-drag racing detail.
Officers were in the area of Riverfront Park on the 0-100 block of State Street in order to deter illegal car meets and street racing. Officers located several vehicles in a parking lot that were in violation of a city ordinance for trespassing in a park after dark.
As officers began to disperse the crowd, one driver, later identified as Smith, did not have a driver’s license. As officers searched the vehicle prior to it being towed, officers located a firearm inside the car. The firearm was loaded and capable of holding 12 rounds of ammunition. Smith was placed under arrest.
35-year-old Darrell Smith of Springfield is charged with:
- Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm
- Carrying a Firearm without a License
- Possession of a Firearm with a Defaced Serial Number
- Operating a Motor Vehicle without a License
- Possession of an Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle
- City Ordinance Violation – Trespassing in a Park after Dark
