SPD Detective Bureau Investigation Leads to Arrest of Kidnapping Suspect

Springfield, Mass. — On Tuesday August 20th at approximately 10:45 a.m., Springfield Police Detectives under the direction of Captain Trent Duda arrested 31-year-old Raul Arellano at the RSW Regional Jail in Front Royal, Virginia on an arrest warrant in connection with a kidnapping in Springfield.

On July 28th, Springfield Police received a missing person’s report for a 13-year-old girl who ran away from home.  Video showed the girl leaving her home and getting into a vehicle around 1:40 a.m.

Working with her family, Detectives were able to identify Arellano as a suspect.  State Police assisted in the investigation and were able to locate Arellano’s vehicle in Virginia heading south.  Virginia State Police conducted a traffic stop in New Market, Virginia, located the girl and arrested Arellano.  The investigation showed that Arellano left his home in Alabama and drove to Springfield after having conversations with the girl online.  It is believed that they had previously met in Alabama where the girl’s primary residence is.

After placing Arellano under arrest, Springfield Detectives flew back from Washington, D.C. to Bradley International Airport before transporting Arellano to Springfield Police Headquarters around 6:45 p.m.
