Springfield, Mass. — On Thursday January 2nd at approximately 5:45 p.m., members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) seized two loaded firearms and arrested two teenagers on the 600 block of Main Street.

For the past several weeks, FIU Detectives have been conducting an investigation with information that a 13-year-old juvenile male was in possession of an illegal firearm.  On Thursday afternoon, Detectives received information that this 13-year-old was currently in possession of a firearm who also had an active warrant for his arrest.

Detectives began conducting surveillance in the Lombard Street area and located the suspect and two unknown subjects on the 600 block of Main Street.  Detectives then observed one of the unidentified subjects, later identified as a 14-year-old male, pull a firearm out of his jacket pocket.

Around 5:45 p.m., the three males entered a parking lot on the 600 block of Main Street when Detectives attempted to stop them.  The 13-year-old began running away and tossed a firearm over a fence.  The 13-year-old then stopped running and was taken into custody.  The firearm was recovered on Niagara Street.

The second suspect who was armed began running away and after a foot pursuit was taken into custody on the Dwight Street Extension.  A firearm was recovered on Adams Street.  He was placed under arrest.
