SPD Homicide Unit Investigation Leads to an Arrest in October 19th Murder
Springfield, Mass. — On Wednesday November 6th, a 16-year-old male suspect was extradited to Massachusetts from New Hampshire in connection with the October 19th murder of 19-year-old Matthew Chaney.
At approximately 12:35 a.m., Saturday October 19th, officers responded to the 100 block of Nursery Street for a ShotSpotter Activation. Officers located an adult male gunshot victim, later identified as Chaney, who succumbed to his injuries on scene.
The Springfield Police Homicide Unit under the direction of Captain Trent Duda began investigating and identified a suspect.
On October 28th, Springfield Police Homicide Detectives applied for and were granted a warrant for the arrest of a 16-year-old juvenile male on murder charges.
At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Friday November 1st, members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and Manchester (NH) Police located and arrested the 16-year-old suspect at a home in Manchester, New Hampshire.
On Wednesday November 6th, Springfield Police Homicide Detectives traveled to Manchester and transported the suspect to the Paul J. Fenton Public Safety Complex where he was booked in the afternoon.
This is an ongoing investigation conducted by the Springfield Police Homicide Unit in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit.
Due to his age, the suspects name and booking photo will not be released.
