SPD Officers Arrest Suspect Who Broke into a Convenience Store with a Hammer

Springfield, Mass. — At approximately 5:25 a.m. on Saturday May 4th, Springfield Police Officers arrested 47-year-old Curtis Combs III in connection with a breaking and entering of a convenience store on Carew Street.

Around 4:30 a.m. officers were patrolling on the 600 block of Carew Street when they observed a shattered glass window at the Racing Mart.  As officers approached the convenience store, they could see three subjects involved in a struggle.  One subject, later identified as Combs, broke free from the struggle as officers arrived.  Combs attempted to flee the scene, dropping cartons of cigarettes as he left the store.  Officers were able to detain Combs and remove a hammer from his hand in the process.

Officers reviewed video from the incident which showed Combs used a hammer to smash a glass window and walk behind the building.  Combs then returned and smashed the glass door with the hammer to enter the store.  Combs began to grab dozens of items when two store employees arrived and attempted to restrain Combs.  That is when officers arrived.

Officers placed Combs under arrest.  The estimated damage to the store is $4000 and the estimate of the items stolen was more than $2600.

  • Breaking and Entering into a Building – Nighttime for a Felony
  • Vandalize Property
  • Possession of a Burglarious Instrument
  • Larceny over $1200
  • Assault & Battery
