SPD Officers Arrest Suspect with Loaded Firearm after Crash

Springfield, Mass. — On Monday August 12th at approximately 9:40 p.m., Springfield Police Officers seized a loaded firearm and arrested 54-year-old Charles Hayes at the intersection of Fountain Street and Woodlawn Street.

Around 9:15 p.m., officers responded to a report of an accident with injuries at the aforementioned intersection.  Prior to the officers’ arrival, a witness removed a firearm from a vehicle involved in the crash that was being driven by Hayes.  Hayes had crashed into a parked car.

Hayes was uninsured, the vehicle was not properly registered, and he also was convicted of previous felony charges.  After Hayes received medical care on scene he was placed under arrest before being transported to Baystate.  Once he was released, he was transported to Springfield Police Headquarters to complete the booking process.  He was also cited for the crash.

54-year-old Charles Hayes of Springfield is charged with:

  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  • Possession of a Firearm without an FID Card
  • Firearm Violation with 3 Prior Violent/Drug Crimes
  • Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended Registration
  • Uninsured Motor Vehicle
