Springfield Police Homicide Unit Charges Two Suspects with Murder

Springfield, Mass. — Just before midnight on Sunday September 24th, Springfield Police Officers responded to an apartment on the 100 block of Lionel Benoit Road for a report of a gunshot victim.

Officers located a 17-year-old juvenile male gunshot victim along with three suspects who remained on scene.

The gunshot victim was transported to Baystate where he succumbed to his injuries late Monday night.

Springfield Police Officers arrested 20-year-old Xavier Rivera, 18-year-old Luis Reyes-Santiago and a 17-year-old juvenile female who are alleged to have been in the same room with the victim at the time of the shooting.

The Springfield Police Homicide Unit under the direction of Captain Trent Duda began investigating and have since charged Reyes-Santiago and Rivera with murder.  The suspects were expected to be arraigned in Springfield District Court on Tuesday.

This remains an ongoing investigation conducted by the Springfield Police Homicide Unit in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit.

18-year-old Luis Reyes-Santiago of Springfield is charged with:

  • Murder
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  • Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
  • Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
  • Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon

20-year-old Xavier Rivera of Ware is charged with:

  • Murder
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  • Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
  • Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
  • Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon

Due to her age, the juvenile female’s name or specific charges will not be released.
