The SPD Reminds Drivers Not to Leave their Unattended Cars Running
Springfield, Mass. — As the weather gets colder, the Springfield Police Department Auto-Theft Unit reminds drivers not to leave their cars unattended while they are running.
Last February alone, there were approximately 50 cars stolen in the city that were either left running or with the keys left inside.
Warming up your car and leaving it running while you grab a coffee seems harmless, but it only takes a car thief a few seconds to steal your vehicle. We’ve seen cars stolen from both home driveways and business parking lots. We are urging drivers to never leave their car unattended while it is running.
These are crimes of opportunity and easily avoidable.
Tips to protect yourself from being a victim of auto-theft:
- Never leave your car running unattended
- Roll up your windows, lock your door and take your keys or key fob with you
- Park in a well-lit area
- Do not leave valuables in plain sight or in your car at all
- Use a steering wheel locking device or a wheel locking device
If you are a victim of auto-theft:
- Call the police and report the theft
- Call your insurance company
