SPD Officers Seize Loaded Firearm from Suspect after Gun Call

Springfield, Mass. — On Thursday May 2nd, at approximately 11:20 p.m., Springfield Police Officers seized a loaded firearm from 39-year-old Rafael Rodriguez on the 800 block of Carew Street.

Around 10:15 p.m., officers responded to a gun call involving a suspect identified as Rafael Rodriguez on Los Angeles Street.  Officers received information that Rodriguez was armed with a firearm and may be heading to a bar on the 800 block of Carew Street.

Officers arrived at the bar and shortly thereafter Rodriguez showed up.  Officers began to detain him when a trafficking weight of cocaine fell to the floor.  Officers also located a gun in his waistband.  Rodriguez was placed under arrest.  Rodriguez had an outstanding warrant for heroin trafficking and was convicted in 2013 in Pennsylvania for attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

39-year-old Rafael Rodriguez of Springfield is charged with:

  • Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm
  • Firearm Violation with 2 Prior Violent/Drug Crimes
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  • Assault & Battery with Dangerous Weapon
  • Cocaine Trafficking, 18 Grams or More
  • Witness Intimidation
  • Larceny Under $1200
  • Assault
  • Assault & Battery on a Family/Household Member
  • Arrest Warrant
