SPD FIU Detectives Seize Rifle, Make Two Arrests

Springfield, Mass. — On Saturday April 27th at approximately 6:35 p.m., members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Sgt. Christopher Hitas seized a loaded rifle and arrested two suspects on the 200 block of Pasco Road.

Around 6:25 p.m., SPD FIU Detectives observed what they believed to be a drug deal near the intersection of Layzon Brothers Road and Goodwin Street.  One of the vehicles involved was able to leave the area.  Detectives were able to conduct a traffic stop with the second vehicle involved after it stopped at a convenience store on the 200 block of Pasco Road.

Detectives detained three subjects; the driver later identified as Elijah Muhammad, the rear seat passenger Adam Battles and a third passenger who was subsequently released.

When Detectives looked into the car they could see a rifle in an open duffel bag in the back seat.  Detectives also recovered additional ammunition and marijuana.  Battles and Muhammad were placed under arrest.

The Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit has seized 36 illegal firearms this year so far, while the entire department has seized 88 illegal firearms.

22-year-old Adam Battles of Ludlow is charged with:

  • Carrying a Loaded Shotgun/Rifle on a Public Way
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Possession of a Firearm without an FID Card
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law

27-year-old Elijah Muhammad of Springfield is charged with:

  • Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law
