Suspect in Stolen Motor Vehicle Shoots at Officers

Springfield, Mass. — On Friday March 1st around 3:00 a.m. Springfield Police Officers in an unmarked cruiser conducting an auto-theft detail were shot at four times by a suspect in a stolen car attempting to break into motor vehicles.

Around 2:45 a.m. Springfield Police Officers were dispatched to Linnell Street for a suspicious motor vehicle and a suspect was pulling on car door handles.  Springfield Police Officers working in an undercover capacity later located this vehicle that was reported stolen out of West Springfield.  The officers observed the suspect pulling at a car door handle on Rathbun Street and drove away. The undercover officers continued to follow the suspect while waiting for assisting marked cruisers to arrive.  The suspect then stopped his stolen motor vehicle at the intersection of Hood and Peer Streets.  The suspect got out of the car and fired four gunshots at the officers.  Neither the officers nor the undercover vehicle was struck.  The suspect got back into the stolen car and drove recklessly at high speeds throughout the city.

Assisting officers located the unoccupied stolen vehicle, a Black 2016 Ford Escape, parked on Derryfield Avenue.  Officers and K-9’s attempted to track the suspect but were unsuccessful at this time.

If anyone in the East Forest Park Neighborhood around Derryfield Avenue has any video of a suspicious person on their cameras between 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. please contact our Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355.
