Suspect With 11 Active Warrants Arrested with Illegal Firearm

Springfield, Mass. — On Thursday March 14th at approximately 8:35 a.m., members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Captain Brian Keenan, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, Holyoke Police Investigation Unit, Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, ATF Boston Field Division, Springfield Field Office and U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force seized an illegal firearm and arrested 21-year-old Yariel Berrios-Ortiz on the 0-100 block of Sanderson Street.

Berrios-Ortiz had 11 outstanding warrants for alleged crimes committed in Springfield, Ludlow, Westfield, Wilbraham and Holyoke.  On February 29th, Task Force Officers located Berrios-Ortiz and conducted a traffic stop.  When Berrios-Ortiz saw the police, he drove into police and civilian vehicles and fled the state.

On Thursday morning Berrios-Ortiz was arrested outside his home on Sanderson Street.  Officers would then execute a search warrant at his apartment and seized a semi-automatic firearm with a large capacity magazine.

21-year-old Yariel Berrios-Ortiz of Springfield is charged with:

  • Possession of a Firearm without an FID Card
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm
  • Improper Storage of a Firearm near a Minor
  • Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
  • Unlicensed Possession of an Assault Weapon
