SPD Officers Seize High Capacity Firearm after Traffic Stop

Springfield, Mass — On Thursday January 20th at approximately 10:30 p.m. an officer monitoring traffic conducted a stop after a car was driving on Roosevelt Avenue near Peer Street with a headlight out.  Once the driver, a 17 year old juvenile male, pulled over the officer also discovered the registration on the car was expired.   The driver was also unlicensed.

The officer offered the driver the opportunity to call a license driver to avoid an arrest, but the officer observed an semi-automatic firearm on the floor of the back seat.  At this point the juvenile was placed under arrest.

During a search of the car officers recovered the loaded high capacity firearm and a large bag of marijuana.  The firearm was reported stolen out of Georgia.

The 17 year old faces numerous firearms, drug and traffic charges.  Due to the age of the juvenile no further information will be released.
